Historic Charleston Attractions:
Charleston, South Carolina is a world-class vacation destination
that plays host to millions and millions of visitors each year.
While modern day Charleston offers a multitude of recreational
activities of the modern variety, the city's rich and diverse
history is also on display. In that sense, a vacation to Charleston
offers you and you family the best of both worlds; the latest
in amusement parks, golfing, and live entertainment, as well
as a celebrated historic district to take you back in time.
As already mentioned the history
of Charleston is a rich one. Even before Charleston gave
birth to the American Civil War, Charleston served as a port
city for early American traders moving cotton and rice to locations
in Europe. These traders built up huge empires with fortunes
to match. The structures and homes that were built in the Charleston
area at the time show off the city's incredible wealth. Today
a tour of these structures is one of the most popular vacation
activities for South Carolina visitors to the Charleston area.
Being the fact that Charleston is South Carolina's oldest city,
its not surprising that over 175 magnificent church steeples
help to make up a spectacular Charleston skyline.
As American history marched on, Charleston continued to mark
major historic moments in the nation's history. Historic Fort
Moultrie is the where the first decisive patriot victory of
the American Revolution took place. Neighboring Fort Sumter
marks the location where the first shots of the Civil War were
fired. Today many of the original buildings from this era are
not only still standing, but are still being used by local businesses
and government departments. This ongoing activity gives Charleston
its "living museum" allure.
Some of Charleston's most popular historic attractions include:
The Calhoun Mansion - This impressive home
was built after the civil war by one of Charleston's wealthiest
men, George Walton Williams. This home is built in the style
of a Victorian Baronial Manor House and boasts 14 foot ceilings,
decorative chandeliers and an early glass skylight.
The Charleston Citadel and Museum - This impressive
structure was built in 1842 and is one of the only two military
state colleges remaining in America. A rich description history
of the college from the mid 19th century right up to the present
is on display at the Citadel Museum.
The Gibbes Museum of Art - This art museum
provides a glimpse into the celebrated history of art in the
American colonial south and specifically in Charleston. This
popular museum opened its doors in 1905 and features a broad
and impressive collection of period paintings from both Europe
and America.
The Heyward-Washington House - This Charleston
home, built in 1772, originally belonged to Thomas Heyward Jr.
and was later occupied by none other than George Washington
himself. Not only is the interior of the home impressive - featuring
a wide variety of period decorations and furnishings, but it
also features a beautiful garden which looks today much like
it would have in the latter 18th century.
The Historic Charleston Foundation Preservation Center
- This is one of the most popular historic attractions found
in the greater Charleston area. The Center showcases Charleston's
architectural history and colonial culture. Both film and exhibits
are on display at the Historic Charleston Foundation Preservation
Center.
And these exciting exhibits and attractions make up just a short
list of the many, varied historic attractions found in the greater
Charleston area. Some of the other popular historic highlights
include: the Joseph Manigault House, the McLeod Plantation,
the Nathaniel Russell House, the Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon,
Ranbow Row, the Aiken-Rhett House, and Cabbage Row.
